What is DNS and Why Does It Matter?

The Domain Name System (DNS) works like the phonebook of the internet: when you type an address like youtube.com, the DNS server translates that name into the actual server IP — something like 142.250.79.14. Without DNS, you'd need to memorize IP addresses to visit any website.

The problem is that most people use the default DNS provided by their ISP — and those servers tend to be slow, unstable, and in some cases log everything you access. Switching to a better DNS can result in:

⚡ Faster page loading
🔒 More privacy and online security
🎮 Lower ping and better stability in online games
🌐 Access to websites blocked by your ISP
👨‍👩‍👧 Family protection with inappropriate content blocking

Doing this manually in Windows means going through Settings → Network → Adapters → Properties → IPv4 → DNS — a long and tedious process. That's where DNS Jumper comes in.

What is DNS Jumper?

DNS Jumper is a free, portable, no-install tool developed by Sordum that lets you switch your Windows DNS server with a single click. The current version is v2.3, compatible with Windows XP through Windows 11 (32 and 64 bit).

No installation needed — just download the executable, open it, and use it. The program comes preloaded with a comprehensive list of the world's top public DNS servers, a built-in speed tester, and various customization options.

How to Download DNS Jumper

Step 1: Visit the official Sordum website: sordum.org/7952/dns-jumper-v2-3

Step 3: Extract the ZIP to any folder on your PC — or even a USB drive.

Step 4: Right-click DnsJumper.exe and select "Run as administrator" (required to modify network settings).

💡 Tip: Save DNS Jumper on a USB drive and use it on any computer without installing anything.

Understanding the Interface

🔌 Select Network Adapter — choose which network card to configure (Wi-Fi, Ethernet, VPN adapters, etc.). Each can have a different DNS.

📋 Choose a DNS Server — dropdown list with dozens of preloaded DNS servers organized by groups (Google, Cloudflare, OpenDNS, Quad9, Family Safe, etc.).

🔵 IPv4 / IPv6 — checkbox to apply DNS to both IPv4 and IPv6 protocols.

Apply DNS — main button that instantly applies the selected DNS to your network card.

Quick Configuration (star icon) — quick access to backup, restore default DNS, system DNS, and general settings.

🚀 Fastest DNS — opens the automatic DNS speed tester.

🔍 Magnifying Glass — displays info about your current DNS and lets you copy IPs to clipboard.

Tutorial: How to Change Your DNS in 3 Steps

Step 1: Under Select Network Adapter, select the active network card on your PC (usually Wi-Fi or Ethernet).

Step 2: Under Choose a DNS Server, select a server from the list. To start, we recommend Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8).

Step 3: Click Apply DNS. Done — your DNS is changed instantly, no restart required.

💡 Tip: If you want to apply DNS to IPv6 as well, check the IPv6 box before clicking Apply.

Finding the Fastest DNS for You

The ideal DNS varies by your location and ISP. DNS Jumper solves this with the Fastest DNS feature:

image.png
Step 1: Click the Fastest DNS button in the main interface.

image.png
Step 2: Click Start DNS Test. The program will automatically test all servers on the list and measure each one's response time.

image.png
Step 3: Results are sorted by speed — the fastest appear at the top, highlighted in green.

image.png
Step 4: Select the fastest one and click Apply DNS Server.

Turbo Resolve: For long server lists, enable Turbo Resolve — it drastically reduces total test time and can automatically apply the fastest DNS at Windows startup.

Backup and Restore — Never Lose Your Connection

📦 Backup: Click Quick Configuration (star icon) → Backup DNS (or use Ctrl+B). DNS Jumper also automatically saves your settings the first time you open it.

🔄 Restore ISP Default: Click Quick ConfigurationDefault DNS to revert to your ISP's original DNS with one click.

↩️ Restore Backup: Click Quick ConfigurationRestore DNS (or Ctrl+R) to restore your saved backup.

Custom DNS

Want to use a DNS not on the list? Check the Custom DNS server box, type the primary and alternate IPs, and click Apply DNS. You can also save custom servers directly to the list through the settings menu.

Per-Adapter Configuration

One of DNS Jumper's most useful features is the ability to configure DNS independently for each network adapter. If you use both Wi-Fi and Ethernet — or have VPN adapters installed — you can set a different DNS for each one. Just select the desired adapter from the dropdown before applying.

Auto-Start with Turbo Resolve

Step 1: Click DNS Options (blue gear) → General Settings tab.

Step 2: Check "Start DNS Jumper on system startup".

Step 3: Check "Apply following parameters at system startup" and type /T default in the field below.

Best DNS Servers in 2026

🔵 Cloudflare — 1.1.1.1 / 1.0.0.1 — Fastest globally. No user data logging. Variant 1.1.1.2 adds malware blocking.

🔴 Google — 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 — Most popular and reliable. Excellent uptime and global infrastructure.

Quad9 — 9.9.9.9 / 149.112.112.112 — Best for security. Automatically blocks malware and phishing domains. No IP logging. Based in Switzerland.

🟠 OpenDNS — 208.67.222.222 / 208.67.220.220 — Best for parental controls and content filtering. Owned by Cisco.

🟢 Cloudflare Family — 1.1.1.3 / 1.0.0.3 — Blocks adult content and malware by default. Perfect for family PCs.

Flush DNS — Clearing the Cache

After switching DNS, clear your Windows DNS cache to make sure the new settings take effect immediately. DNS Jumper has a dedicated Flush DNS button — click it after applying any server change.

Is DNS Jumper Safe?

Yes. DNS Jumper installs nothing on the system, doesn't access the internet on its own, and all changes are made to Windows network settings — the same ones you'd change manually. Everything is fully reversible with one click using the restore function. Always download from the official Sordum site: sordum.org.
